Ending My Dating Blog Hiatus

19 Sep

Summer might be ending in Cleveland – but Summer has returned to the dating blog world. Please try and contain your excitement.

There’s a chill in the air, the sun sets before 8pm, my impeccable tan has faded.. and I honestly have nothing better to do, so I guess it’s a good time to end my summer blogging hiatus.

Oddly enough, I’m still dating the same person I was in June (see last dating blog post). Of course my little foray into monogamy isn’t without challenges. There are many. Future posts about awkward relationship moments will follow shortly.

Being half of an actual couple (where a significant other is around more than once a week) has been a shock to my system. I’m not quite used to it. Like, what do you mean I can no longer eye fuck that tall guy in the corner until he comes over to give me his number? No weekend boating excursion to the islands with a random man? And apparently it’s not okay to partake in my yearly ritual of meeting my insanelyhot ex-boyfriend for dinner. I kid, I kid. Of course I’ll take my boyfriend over any of those. It simply took a bit of adjusting to the notion that I could no longer run off and do as I pleased with whoever, whenever, wherever. I’m over 30 after all.. it’s easy to get set in my ways.

I still stumble when trying to utter the phrase “my boyfriend.” It sounds foreign to someone like me who has been habitually single for the bulk of life. Don’t get me wrong – I’m happy to say he’s my boyfriend. It just resonates a bit funny.

The two of us became serious rather quickly, as we are both impulsive people. I hope it continues to progress. I’m rather fond of him. Eventually, the whole “where are we heading/what do you want for your future” discussion will be necessary to ensure our goals somewhat align. Probably sooner rather than later. That should be about as pleasant as… oh, I don’t know…me being forced to spend another hour with this guy? (Metaphors are so not my forte). Ahhh, the joys of being single after thirty! Isn’t it refreshing to know that time is no longer on your side when it comes to dating?

Speaking of the joys of being single after 30, have you seen this My Friends Are Married  tumblr site? This is my life (and possibly many of the readers of this blog) rolled into some .GIF-file laden pages on the web. The most depressing part isn’t the stark reality that everyone I grew up with is married and I’m not. It’s that the author is only 25! Sigh. Maybe she lives in the south? People get married abnormally young in the south. Right? (Note: I just scrolled through the latest posts and she is from the south. Phew.)

Sorry if visiting the My Friends Are Married site ruined your night.  I’ll leave you with a peppy reminder: 51% of marriages end in divorce. Another 25% of marriages should end due to the total despair of one or more parties. So, a whopping 24% of your married friends may stand a fighting chance at happiness.
